A caffeinated dream that I am proud to be a part of. The Java Momma aka Melissa Shoop, her husband, assistant/BFF, and a small group of her friends (we call ourselves “The Caffeinated Aunties”) decided we were underwhelmed with the coffee DS options that were available to us. An idea was born and within hours a plan was set and we all linked arms and happily skipped down the unknown path towards birthing a start up company…
Starting a business from doodles on a paper to a reality in this current social media engrossed world, is a ridiculously hard and stressful dream. It’s doable, but so much harder these days than, let’s say…..before the invention of the internet. Everyone expects INSTANT! No one seems to appreciate the time, work, and lack of sleep involved with starting something new…or they just don’t fucking care. People want what they want right here! Now! Yesterday! Building websites, creating a business structure, legal dealings…they all take time! That isn’t even touching on product.
Java Momma Coffee officially “launched” after 4 weeks of creating something out of nothing. The amount of support and recruiting from our friends, family and loved ones was INCREDIBLE! It essentially exploded over night. Our goal to launch with 500 consultants/Baristas was soon annihilated when we had 3000 people knocking at the door to get in on this delicious caffeinated venture! Problem we now were facing was getting product and barista kits out to that many people! This is not some corporate fancy fucking office with 100 employees and shiny new machinery. This is a start up, a group of about 3 people working their asses off is Home Office/ Java Central. Caffeinated Aunties (there are now 4 of us) are not paid staff. We volunteer our time to help handle a lot of data entry, Barista/consultant management, emails, team trees…..everything is done by hand because we don’t have automated systems in play yet! Have you seen Shark Tank? Every business pretty much starts out in their garage/kitchen/car whatever. You don’t just *BAM* have a huge production facility to start out with.
The small town roaster we partnered with? Just to accommodate our launch had to double their staff, purchase new machines and create a second shift! (Hey, we fucking helped the economy here lol ). The coffee is roasted, cooled/dried for about 3 days (a necessary process unless you like mildew with your beans…) , ground to specification, packaged and shipped (this process takes about a full work week to accomplish) The gourmet coffee is fucking delicious by the way. We have certified organic and fair trade coffee options as well as a huge assortment of flavored roasts, teas and other products. Something for everyone.
All our current Baristas (independent consultants that make a commission from their Java Momma Coffee sales) are essentially the beta testers for our new business. They are helping us fine tune the products, logistics, customer support and honestly everything. Patience is what is needed. Patience is what has been asked of them. We have been upfront and very transparent during this entire process. This is NOT instant coffee to fuel the unrealistic expectations of our social media driven world. Good things take time, there is no fucking magical recipe for instant success.
Shit happens. Welcome to life…. here, have a cup of coffee <3
